On Target and On First with me!
I recently sailed from N.Y. to Southampton, England on the Q.E.II and was knocked overboard when I discovered that Chris Costello, Lou's daughter would be presenting her slide and clip show entitled "Lou's On First." What a magnificent journey Chris took me on during her 1 hour show. I immediately purchased her book in their bookstore and for the remaining voyage could not put it down! Bravo Chris Costello for your wonderful, beautiful and candid insight into a man I adored, your father!

A MUST READ
Having very little immersity in woody allens work I read Hirschs book anyway. The book was fun to read and well prepared. I was able to share the authors enthusiasm even without famililarty of allens work. If youv'e seen just one of allens film then this is a must read, it is comically and insightful, with enlightning critizism and praise.

Low Speed Aerodynamics
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (15 February, 2001)
Authors: Joseph Katz and Allen Plotkin
Average review score:

A must for anyone interested in panel methods
Comprehensive in both theoretical and numerical presentation. The authors show how to model invicid, incompressible aerodynamics using pnael methods which are based on potential theory. They also show how to incorporate viscosity inside the boundary layer. I found the book's detailed treatment of panel methods for unsteady aerodynamics particularly useful. Most textbooks only show the steady state case. The book is very practical with very good description of algorithms. At the end of the book, you can also find sample programs developed by authors' students.

The Lucky Yak
Published in School & Library Binding by Houghton Mifflin Co (Juv) (September, 1980)
Authors: Annetta Lawson and Allen Say
Average review score:

It's a WONDERFUL book, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
The Luck Yak is an interesting and witty story about a family (of yaks) who immigrate to the U.S. It is written for children, but its theme is one for all ages... bloom where you are planted, or be careful what you wish for! The illustrations are superb!!

Luminous Dreams
Published in Paperback by Small Press (January, 1997)
Author: Allen Ginsberg
Average review score:

A Dream Key to the Artist's Life
If you know an artist's dreams, then you have the key to his art.

This tiny volume (approximately the size of City Light's pocket Poets Series) seems to be inspired by the published dream journals of both Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. There are only some seven dreams here, in a little over 50 pages, but it is enough. That is because these are not common dreams.

The first dream is entitled _History of Jewish Socialist Party in America_. This is a dream of humor and insecurity centering around a tiny radical group's frantic attempt to convince its single FBI infiltrator that they are worth spying on. It reads like a Woody Allen sketch.

The _Texas Power Apocalyse_ comes as close to a prophetic dream as any I've read. It deals with a huge national powergrid centered around a great tower in Texas crashing and taking most of the country with it. It would seem that Ginsberg foresaw Enron....

_Ambiguous Guru, Nervous Student_ is another dream of insecurity, but centering around the theme of spirituality. In this dream Ginsberg is desperately trying to get the approval of his Tibeten Guru- and is devastated when he does not get it.

_The Book of Good and Evil_ seems to be a visit to what Burroughs called the Place of Dead Roads. It is a nightmare of disturbing images of savage conflict and betrayal.

As for _Two Dreams of Jack Kerouac_, the most revealing part is that Jack goes through the very center of the Vast Valley of the World, while Allen turns off to live on the perimeter. This dream also confirms the conviction that society in not embracing, or understanding, Kerouac's American Vision consigned itself to our current sad state. Even in his dreams, Ginsberg never faultered from this vision- he kept the faith.

Finally, _Dream Archives_ seems to show what Ginsberg would most like to find. It deals with his inheriting a European Villa full of obscure manuscripts dealing with the pre WWII international, artistic, political, and spiritual scene. Not unlike the way some of us dream of inheriting a place in San Fran full of unpublished Beat manuscripts....

The Mad Dog 100

The Mad Dog got me reading again
I never read books. Chris Russo got me reading again. It is a great read for ANY sports fan because the Mad Dog has great open minded opionons on sports, sports personal and historic sports. One thing I really like about Russo's view of sports, is that he kept it do events he saw in his lifetime. I can argue with some subjects with the MADDOG for days. Thank for Chris for getting me envolved with reading again.

Mad white giant : a journey to the heart of the Amazon jungle

A Tale to Tell
A book as breathtakeing as the experience Byron Allen experienced. I was surprised to find so many of Byron Allen's books were no longer in print. I first heard of this modern day adventurer from a BBC report. Having the opportunity to visit England recently, I went to a popular bookstore and managed to find a copy or two of his various writings. Mr. Allen combines humor and a great intuitive knowledge to his writings and his travels. For anyone who loves a good story of adventure and daring-do, Mr. Allen's books are a must read. After finding so many out of print, I'm sorry I didn't buy more than just the two while I was able to. Although by no means a how-to book, it is absolutely the way things should be experienced.

Maine: The Spirit of America (Art of the State)
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (May, 2000)
Author: Edgar Allen Beem
Average review score:

It catches the spirit
This discreet unpretentoius little book is a gem. It gets a great balance between facts and info and the spirit and art of the state. A great starting point for planning a trip to the state of Maine. I was keen to find out as much about the state before my planning was too advanced and this has been an enormous help in steering toward some (apparently, not been yet so not sure) very interesting places. It is not designed to sell the state or any particular element such as hotels or dining. It does cover what it says the Spirit and the Art. A really great little book that I will treasure and return to I will also be buying others in the series!!

Making it as a Couple: Prescription for a Quality Relationship
Published in Paperback by FMC BOOKS (01 February, 1999)
Author: Allen Fay
Average review score:

An absolute gem that saved my relationship!
My feeling is that most "self help" books, in reality, are the authors helping themselves to the reader's money. With that as my overall opinion I decidedly was not excited when my girlfriend insisted I get a copy of "Making it as a Couple." I agreed to read it only to make her happy. However, after reading just the first dozen or so pages, I was really impressed. I stayed up and finished the book in one night.

It is spectacular!

Fay's insights, principals, and ideas are BRILLIANT! The book has no shrink-double talk and no Freudian bull**** or touchy-feelie filler. Instead each and every page has at least one very real, genuinely creative, unique, and practical ideas on what to do when there's problems in a relationship. I can't say Arlene (my girlfriend) and I now live in perfect relationship bliss. BUT this book did help uncover our major problems and (MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL) told us SPECIFICALLY how we could solve them! In fact, things are the best they have ever been with us. The shrink that wrote the book (Fay) helped us more (without ever meeting us) than a local psychiatrist/so-called relationship expert that I paid over $1,000.00 to for nine office visits. The book is an undiscovered gem. If I sound like I'm wild about this book--- that's true. I can't say enough good stuff about it.

With this book and a few hours I think any couple can solve their own problems ...or at least get a good idea if they are solvable. We spent two hours a week AS A COUPLE using the book's relationship tools. The techniques given might at first seem crazy. But upon reflection and use you'll see they work. In fact we have gone months without a fight (in the past ... every week had at least one big blowup). Now we seriously talking about getting married! I can't recommend this book highly enough. I know I sounds like one of those morons on Oprah-Jerry-Ricky ... but the truth is the book really changed my life! I can only say that about one other book (and that's my bankbook).
